The Last Honest Engagement Rate

On August 24, YouTube starts counting a view at the first frame, and every metric with views in the denominator changes meaning. Measured six days before the switch: the median long-form engagement rate is 3.67% across 1.46 million active channels, the first-frame standard already reads 22% lower within the same channel, and the gap is a commenting gap, likes hold at parity.

The 8,000-Hour Wall

YouTube doubled its monetization entry bar, the first increase since 2018. Census data on 1.47 million active channels puts about 85,000 of them in the qualification window that just closed: 1 in 8 of every channel that met the old watch-hours requirement. The Shorts route halves exactly, from 25,975 qualified channels to 12,819.
